Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21, 2024

As we recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, we affirm our unwavering support and commitment to honouring the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. This day is a powerful reminder of the rich heritage and enduring strength of Indigenous communities, whose profound connections to the land and traditions have shaped our collective history and continue to enrich our present.

We acknowledge the injustices and systemic inequities that Indigenous peoples have endured for centuries, including the loss of land, culture, and autonomy. It is our responsibility to listen, learn, and act in ways that promote restoration, reparation, respect, and justice.

On this day and every day, we commit to:

  1. Educating Ourselves and Others: We pledge to deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues. Through education, we aim to dismantle stereotypes, promote awareness, and foster appreciation for the diverse contributions of Indigenous peoples.
  2. Supporting Indigenous Sovereignty: We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities in their efforts to protect their lands, waters, languages, and traditions. We support their right to self-determination and autonomy in decisions affecting their lives and future generations.
  3. Promoting Equity and Inclusion: We are dedicated to creating inclusive environments where Indigenous voices are heard and respected. We commit to amplifying Indigenous perspectives in our policies, practices, and partnerships.
  4. Advocating for Justice: We will actively work to address and rectify the historical and ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. This includes supporting initiatives that aim to achieve social, economic, and environmental justice for Indigenous communities.
  5. Building Meaningful Relationships: We seek to build and nurture relationships with Indigenous individuals and communities based on mutual respect, trust, and collaboration. By engaging in genuine dialogue and partnership, we hope to support their visions and aspirations.

Indigenous Peoples Day is not just a day of recognition; it is a call to action. Let us all commit to honouring and uplifting Indigenous peoples, celebrating their enduring legacies, and working together toward a future of equity, justice, restoration, reparation, and healing.
