Inclement Weather Procedures

EMERGENCY CLOSURES

The school can be closed due to challenges with weather and electricity (e.g., a lack of heating in the winter).

WEATHER RELATED ISSUES

 'Snowy Day' procedures.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL UPDATE FROM THE SCHOOL IN ALL WEATHER SITUATIONS THAT WILL AFFECT SCHOOL CLOSURES OR CHANGES TO WATER TAXIS AND/OR BUSES.

POWER OUTAGES BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS

In cases where the power is off before school starts, but there are no other perceived safety concerns, school will officially remain open. However, of course lighting will be limited, and the school may be cold. These will not be ideal situations for student learning and it is recommended that parents keep their children home if possible. We will monitor the power outage with BC Hydro throughout the day and will provide information to families if the power to the school returns. Updates will be posted on the school website and through Facebook.

POWER OUTAGES WHILE SCHOOL IS IN SESSION

If the power goes out while classes are in session, children are safe in the school with staff and we will continue learning as best we can. As always, if it is safe to do so and you would like to come and get your child please use the sign-out procedures in the office. However, please do not feel pressure to immediately get to the school. We recognize the role many parents play on the island and that they may not be able to get to the school.

We will monitor the outage with BC Hydro to determine a likely timeframe for power to return. If the power is not likely to come back on during the school day or if any other safety concern arises, a decision will be made by the school principal to begin a callout to families to have children picked up by an approved guardian. These calls will come directly from the office. If it is not possible to pickup children they will continue to be supervised by school staff.
