Back in the 2009-2010 school year, one class at Salt Spring Elementary School participated in a year long integrated water theme. This led to school-wide plans that develop ecological literacy through project-based learning:
The deep learning and development of stewardship that occurred for the students involved in the project has inspired us to expand to a whole school theme. We feel that by connecting students with nature and involving them in real community projects, they will learn to appreciate the natural world and will become stewards for the environment. We also believe that getting students outside and working on meaningful projects will also enhance their emotional well-being. This goal supports our vision for Salt Spring Elementary to involve parents and the local community in promoting and inspiring active learning and social responsibility.

For 2010-2011, the school continued with a year-long, school-wide plan to develop ecological literacy through project-based learning. The integrated theme was based on water.
Last year the school built their theme around forest. And this year the process continues with an integrated sky theme.
