Administrative Announcement 23-07-07

The Board of Education for School District No. 64 (Gulf Islands) is announcing that, after five years of service, Dr. Scott Benwell will be transitioning away from the district and his role as Superintendent of Schools/Acting Secretary Treasurer.

The Board will be engaging with a professional consultant to oversee the process of recruitment and hiring for a skilled and experienced leader for the position of Superintendent to begin January 1, 2024. Dr. Benwell will maintain his role as Acting Secretary Treasurer until April 30, 2024 and the expected return of Jesse Guy from her parental leave. This extended transition will enable the board to engage a fulsome search for Dr. Benwell’s successor while maintaining operational leadership in the coming year.

Superintendent, Dr. Benwell has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving outcomes for all Gulf Islands learners and has been instrumental in focussing efforts on critical successes now reflected in completion and achievement rates comparable to those of the highest performing school district in the province. Under his leadership, the district has realized a dramatically improved financial position and the fiscal stability necessary to operate a public school district.

The Board respects Dr. Benwell’s decision to leave School District 64 and we wish him well in his career and other pursuits. The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Benwell for his leadership and dedication to this district. He is a valued member and leader of our education management team and will be missed.

Please join me in wishing him every success in his future endeavours.

Sincerely,

Tisha Boulter, Board Chair
